Dundalk court: Jailed further for series of charges

A 34 year old man recently sentenced for possessing a stolen BMW that he fitted with false number plates, has been jailed for a further 10 months,  for a series of charges which had been adjourned at Dundalk District Court on an ongoing basis, pending the outcome of his Circuit Court case.

Evaldas Petrauskas formerly with addresses at Castletown Road, Dundalk, Five Oaks, Drogheda and Bride's Glen, Applewood, Swords pleaded guilty to a number of bike thefts, dangerous driving and burglary.

Dundalk District Court heard last Wednesday how the defendant stole bikes that were locked out a number of premises - on July 6th 2021 on Church Street, Dundalk, Dundalk Retail Park on November 2nd the same year and stole an e-scooter that was locked up outside Tesco on West Street in Drogheda on October 28th 2022.

On November 29th or 30th 2021, he stole the key to a Vauxhall Insignia in a burglary at an address at Mullach Alainn in Omeath, while the family who lived there were asleep in bed.

He also drove at high speed and overtook in the face of oncoming traffic in an effort to evade gardai at Newtownbalregan, Dundalk on July 14h last year and was prosecuted for a further count of dangerous driving on Market Street, Dundalk on November 23rd last, when he drove at high speed the wrong way down the one-way street.

Petrauskas had 60 previous convictions, and the Defence solicitor said his client was working part time as a winkle picker on minimum wage, and he had not applied for bail after he went into custody on November 25th last year.

He was sentenced in the Circuit Court earlier this month and has a release date in November next year.

Judge Eirinn McKiernan jailed him for a total of 10 months, consecutive to his current sentence, and also banned him from driving for 10 years.
