The one acre site was opened in 1850 following the graveyard at the workhouse becoming full.
Burials took place until 1912 but one was witnessed a burial taking place at the sacred ground in the 1950s, a committee member for Dundalk Famine Graveyard said.
There are no headstones to mark the graves but only some small marker stones with crosses marking some graves.
The one acre site was purchased by Thomas Fortesque for £20 from Mr Mcevoy of Killally House.
The committee who have restored the graveyard over the past 20 years ensure a service of remembrance is held annually.
There is no record of who's buried in the graveyard but its believed 4000 souls are buried within the four walls of the graveyard.
