Mannan Castle Golf Notes: Club goes close to victory in Peggy Nelson Trophy Final

Mannan Castle Golf Notes: Denise McGuinness takes the spoils in tough conditions

Mannan Castle Golf Course

With windy conditions across the whole weekend, it was no surprise to see good scoring in Division 1. Shane Donohue took the honours with a score of 41pts. Shane is coming into a bit of form and with the captain’s prize only a couple of weeks away, it’s good timing on his part.

Finishing in second spot was the ever-consistent Patsy Hoey with a score of 39pts. Division 2 saw the recently crowned President’s prize winner take first spot. Paul Heavey is having a brilliant year so far and shot a great score of 39pts. Runner up was William Herdman with a score of 37pts.

Seamus Bellow won Division 3 with a score of 39pts. Seamus played a very solid round of 19pts front nine and 20pts back nine. Pat Healy finished in second spot with a score of 38pts.

The score of the weekend came in Division 4 with Ken Campbell shooting a brilliant 42pts. Having shot an incredible 23pts front nine, Ken finished his round with 19pts on the back nine. Kyriakos Delkos finished runner up with a score of 39pts.

MANNAN CASTLE SENIORS

The heavy showers later in the day didn't affect Mannan Castle Seniors 13-hole competition.  The large turnout finished before the deluge.

Brendan Morris was the narrow winner overall with an excellent score of 32 points. After a steady front 9 of 20 points, which included three pars, he finished strongly with two pars and a birdie two in his last four holes.

In Category 1 Club Captain Barry Conroy was the winner on 29 points, with five pars on his card. His only blemish was a double bogey on the second hole.

After his extraordinary shot last week Eddie Rouiller was back to doing what he does best. He put together a steady round, accumulating points to card a score of 32 points.

He was however subject to a penalty of one shot for previous success, but nevertheless won Category 2 on countback from an unlucky Jim Hanratty on 31 points.

Senior Men 13-Holes Stableford 4th July - Overall Winner: Brendan Morris (20) 32pts. Category 1: Barry Conroy (17) 29pts. Category 2: Eddie Rouiller (27) 31pts c/b.

MANNAN CASTLE LADIES

A storming back nine was the secret to success in this week's Ladies competition for Mary MacNamee, who came home in 41, with a birdie on the 17th a highlight to finish top of the leaderboard with 38 points.

Pipped into second on countback, Angela Evers continued her remarkable streak with another 38 points in a couple of days on different courses. In a round that had six pars, not even a couple of no-score holes could dent another impressive total.

Three players finished with 37 points, but Niamh McGovern's strong second nine helped her take this week's third place on the countback. Congratulations to the winners, and well done to everyone who played. Many thanks to this week's generous sponsor, McCann Funeral Directors & Grave Works:

18 Hole Stableford sponsored by Amy McCann Funeral Directors & Grave Works July 5th 2023: 1st Mary MacNamee (19) 38pts, 2nd Angela Evers (26) 38pts c/b, 3rd Niamh McGovern (37) 37pts c/b.

On Monday 3rd July, a team of 3 players with three different handicap sections in Marie Finnegan, Mary Cassidy and Angela Evers did us proud as they played at Dunmurray Golf Club in the Peggy Nelson Trophy Final where the best two scores on each hole counted.

As a team, they finished in 2nd place overall with a fantastic team score of 81pts, one shot behind the winners St Patrick's Golf Club.

As if that wasn't enough, Angela Evers was tied for first place with a fabulous score of 38pts in her handicap section 3 (Index 24.0 to 36.0) and she finished tied for first overall. Mary Cassidy finished in second place in Section 2 (Index 16.0 to 23.9) with a score of 35pts.
