After the mid season break, Dundalk are back in action later tonight. And what a way to return, as they make the trip down the M1 to face Drogheda United in a vital Louth Derby in Weavers Park (Kick off 7:45PM).
The Lilywhites recorded a huge 1-0 win when last playing in the venue back in March, with goalkeeper Nathan Shepperd playing a huge role in the victory, saving a vital penalty from Freddie Draper.
“It was a good night,” he recalled. “It wasn't the prettiest game but that doesn't really matter sometimes, especially in a derby. Connor scored a great goal and the ending was good as well.”
While attention this week may have been on the club's European draw, the Welshman assured supporters that all their focus has been on the upcoming clash with their Louth rivals.
“Europe has obviously been the focus for a lot of people this week but we aren’t looking past Friday’s game with Drogheda,” he strssed. “It’s a derby and it's always a good atmosphere and a good game up there and we’ll be hoping to come away with the three points.”
After a tough few weeks, the lilywhites had finally began finding some form prior to the break, as wins over UCD and Cork City brought them back up to fifth place in the table. However, their opponents are in good form too, having most recently defeated St Pat's 2-1.
“It’s always a tough game at Weavers Park,” said Dundalk head coach Stephen O’Donnell. “When we beat them up there early in the season, they played very well and they were unlucky to lose.
“We’re aware of the challenge that’s ahead of us but we went into the break on the back of two of our best performances of the season and we’re looking forward to it.”
With the exception of long-term absentees John Mountney and Robbie Benson, Stephen O’Donnell has a fully fit squad at his disposal, but he will be working working without the services of Wasiri Williams, whose loan spell with the club has come to an end.
