Mannan Castle Golf Notes: Carrickmacross Lions Club Classic proves hugely popular

The Winners in the Carrickmacross Lions Club Golf Classic receiving their prizes

Long and testing was the order of the day, and it was reflected in the scores with only three players breaking a score of nett 70.

First place went to Val Donoghue with a score of nett 68, Val produced a strong back nine to win by a shot. Paul Heavey finished in second place with a score of nett 69, beating Pauric Dowdall on the count back.

Pauric himself had a score of nett 69. The gross prize went to Tomas Pepper, who shot a two over par 72 which included three birdies.

Carrickmacross Lions Club held a very successful Golf Classic in Mannan Castle Golf Club on Friday 26th May. A huge thanks to all who sponsored the event, sponsored teams, and prizes. Especially the main sponsor Carrickmacross Credit Union.

The course was in excellent condition. The day included golf, a small auction, a raffle, ice cream and cool drinks served at the 13th, plus a delicious meal served by chef Tommy.

Thanks to all the volunteers who helped make this event a great success. Congratulations to the winning teams.

MANNAN CASTLE SENIORS

Mannan Castle Seniors held their first major of the year. Club President Dick Bourke's Prize was up for grabs and the biggest turnout ever of seniors played on the day. Dick welcomed everyone and wished them all the best of luck.

The course was in magnificent condition thanks to the efforts of John McBride and his staff, and low scores were anticipated.

Thomas Gartlan carded the best score on the day, recording an excellent 33 points for the thirteen holes. His card was error free apart from a double bogey on the difficult ninth hole. This was more than made up by a great birdie-par finish on 12 and 13.

Graeme Woodcock was practically error free as well, with a double bogey on the sixth his only blemish, seeing him finishing with 31 points for runner up spot.

David MacGuinness was the third player to break the 30-point barrier. Double bogeys on the third and sixth holes were his mistakes in a round which included five pars.

Presidents Prize to the Seniors 13 Holes Tuesday 23rd May - 1st: Thomas Gartlan (21) 33pts, 2nd Graeme Woodcock (20) 31pts, 3rd David MacGuinness (22) 30pts.

MANNAN CASTLE LADIES

Mary McCabe was the clear winner in this week’s stroke competition, where the first prize was sponsored by Expert Marron Electrical.  Mary’s front nine was nothing exciting, but her par-bogey golf off the back nine helped secure her win by three shots.

Angela Gartlan was second with 70 nett, on the breakdown; Angela kept her head down and finished much better in this stroke than she did in the last one.

In third place Noreen Murphy was happy with her round also on 70 nett, beating Aine Fitzmaurice on the countback.  If Borren had of played the 15th hole better, she could have been higher up the podium.

Useless piece of information, but over 90% of the ladies who played in this competition played the first hole badly. Congratulations to all the winners and of course our sponsor Marron Electrical.

Ladies Weekly 18 Hole Marrons Expert Electrical Strokeplay: 1st Mary McCabe (25) 67nett, 2nd Angela Gartlan (22) 70 nett c/b, 3rd Noreen Murphy (28) 70 nett c/b.

Congratulations to our Breffni Shield Team of Lady Captain Teresa Butler/ Geraldine Finnegan and Marie Finnegan/Ali Ellis, who came 2nd in Ashbourne with a fabulous score of 150 points. The overall winners were Blackbush with 149 points.
