Mannan Castle Golf Notes: Barry Hand secures the win in week 2 of Spring League

Mannan Castle Golf Notes: Denise McGuinness takes the spoils in tough conditions

Mannan Castle Golf Course

Week 2 of the Spring league led to two busy days on the course.  Credit to the greens keeping staff and volunteers for having the course in brilliant shape for the time of year.

The early leader of Division 1 is Barry Hand. He did very little wrong on his way to a brilliant 31pts on the Sunday morning, holding off Shane Donohue by two shots.

Division 2 was the most competitive of the weekend, with four players finishing on 31pts. Gerard McGeown had his first competitive round of the year and showed no signs of rust, beating Peter Rooney on the count back.

Youth came out on top in Division 3 with young Simon Kelly shooting a super score of 33pts. He was following in his father’s footsteps, and it won’t be the last time he beats his dad’s score. David Flynn finished second with a score of 31pts.

Spring League Week 2 27th/28th January 2023: Div 1 - Barry Hand (PH-10) 31pts, Div 2 - Gerard McGeown (PH-17) 31pts, Div 3 - Simon Kelly (PH-27) 33pts.

MANNAN CASTLE SENIORS

After the exceptional scoring recently, the golf returned to more normal levels on Tuesday last. Maybe the cold breeze had a greater effect than would have been anticipated.

An exception on the day was David Flynn. His card contained one 4 pointer and four 3 pointers to return a score of 24 points for the nine holes.

In second place was Dick Bourke who took inspiration from his playing partner of last week, Sean Harvey. His card contained a great two on the 17th hole in his score of 20 points. Fred Fitzsimons came third, one point further back on 19 points.

Senior Results Tuesday 31st January (9-hole handicap): 1st David Flynn (11) 24pts, 2nd Dick Bourke (6) 20pts, 3rd Fred Fitzsimons (10) 19pts.

MANNAN CASTLE LADIES

Playing over the alternate 13 holes, Marie Finnegan quickly got into cruise control on the 4th, making the first of six pars then finishing strongly with a birdie 3 on the 18th for a winning total of 28 points.

Countback separated the two players who finished on 26 points. Mary MacNamee's four pars helped her amass a fine total and secure second place from last week's winner, Louise Hanratty, whose consecutive strong showing included nine pars. Yet she still had to settle for third place this time.

For some, it was their first game of the year, and there was a lot of excellent scoring throughout the pack.

The Spring League is now in its second week. Teams have been drawn and details will appear on the noticeboard. Remember that there are individual category prizes as well as team prizes to be won, so get out and play for yourself as well as your team.

Spring Weekly 13 Hole 1st February 2023: 1st Marie Finnegan (12) 28 pts, 2nd Mary MacNamee (16) 26 pts c/b, 3rd Louise Hanratty (5) 26 pts.
