Fianna Fail’s Erin McGreehan, after winning a seat in Louth, said becoming a TD was a childhood dream come true.
The mother-of -four told the Dundalk Democrat there should be more “mammies in the Dáil” as that is what “puts fire in her belly” to fight for healthcare and disability rights.
McGreehan was elected without meeting the quota with 8, 629 votes on the third day of the count in Louth.
McGreehan said: “I am beyond words, it is just such an important day for me and my family. I want to thank everybody.
“I took Constance as my Confirmation name, I have believed in politics from such a young age.
“It is incredible to think that someone who is just an ordinary person can have her dreams come true.
“I am a TD. There is an Erin in Dail Eireann. I am just overwhelmed by all the support and goodwill.
“I will continue to concentrate on the issues I concentrated on in the Seanad, and that is healthcare; it is disability.
“It is children and the services they should be getting that there not getting.
“As a mammy of four that is what drives me, it is what puts fire in my belly.
“It is about putting down the foundations for our wee people now, so they are staying here and they are thriving
“Maybe there should be more mammies in the Dail, as that is what drives me every single day of the week.
“It is about equality and access to services.”
