Five Louth parks have once again been recognised with the Green Flag Award, the international quality benchmark for public green spaces.

The awards were presented by An Taisce - The National Trust for Ireland at a ceremony held at Maynooth Campus on Wednesday, 12th November, where 128 Irish parks, gardens, greenways, and wildlife sanctuaries received Green Flag status, an increase of eight sites compared to last year.

Among them are five Louth County Council managed parks:

  • Aisling Park, Dundalk
  • Blackrock Community Park, Blackrock
  • Icehouse Hill Park, Dundalk
  • St Dominic’s Park, Drogheda
  • St Helena’s Park, Dundalk

Additionally, Green Flag Community Awards were presented to Dromiskin Heritage Park and Ginnety's Pond Nature Park, both of which are maintained by Dromiskin Tidy Towns.

The Green Flag Award programme, now in its 30th year and operating in 30 countries worldwide, assesses sites against eight key criteria, including environmental management, biodiversity, and visitor experience. Each site undergoes an annual inspection by qualified judges to ensure standards are maintained.

Cllr Sean Kelly, Cathaoirleach of Louth County Council, said: “Retaining these Green Flag Awards is a testament to the dedication of our staff and volunteers who work tirelessly to ensure our parks remain welcoming, sustainable, and accessible for everyone. These spaces are vital for community wellbeing, and we are proud to see Louth represented among Ireland’s best.”

David Conway, Chief Executive of Louth County Council, added: “Achieving these awards, year after year, reflects our commitment to environmental stewardship and quality public amenities. I want to acknowledge the invaluable contribution of volunteers, particularly the Blackrock Park Committee and Dromiskin Tidy Towns, and our council staff in the operations and environmental delivery section, whose hard work ensures these parks meet the highest standards.”
