Ongoing projects to combat climate change continue to be a hallmark of Dromiskin Tidy Towns, with the recent completion of a Sustainable Urban Drainage System (SuDS)— funded through Louth County Council’s Climate Action Fund—marking another key  milestone in the group’s Three-Year Tidy Towns Plan.

Never one to rest on their laurels, the committee saw Climate Action Week, which ran from October13th to 19th, as an opportunity to take on a series of small but meaningful local actions with a big collective impact.

At the heart of this year’s activities was the expansion of the community orchard along Siúl na Manach.

Thanks to the generosity of 36 local families, each sponsoring a tree, the project has now doubled in size—completing this unique dispersed orchard initiative.

A community event was held on Saturday, 18th October to celebrate the planting and to acknowledge the sponsors.

Pat Mulligan, Chair of Dromiskin Tidy Towns, opened proceedings by thanking everyone involved and highlighting the deeper meaning behind the project saying: “Each tree represents an expression of love—love for family, for children and grandchildren, and for nature itself.”

Cllr. Robert Nash, Chair of the Dundalk Municipal District, joined the celebrations, commending Dromiskin for its ongoing innovation and community spirit.

Cllr Nash said: “Dromiskin has become one of my favourite destinations because there’s always something new to see and admire.

"The collaboration and dedication here are truly inspiring.”

The village’s progress in green infrastructure owes much to the expertise of local Landscape  Architect Kevin Halpenny, a valued Tidy Towns volunteer. Kevin spoke on the day about  the importance of thinking globally but acting locally saying: “Dromiskin’s Community Orchard builds climate resilience at a local level while contributing  to global action.”

He also praised the Green Schools Committee of St. Peter’s N.S., whose members Rian Watters and Aoife Truedale delivered a heartfelt climate action poem written specially for  the event.

Following the planting ceremony, attendees made their way to St. Peter’s N.S. for the  announcement of the Climate Action Poster Competition results. Certificates and prizes  were presented to the talented young artists:
