Dundalk RFC will honour Brian ‘Bonzo’ Byrne who made a significant contribution to the club

Dundalk RFC are planning a Remembrance Event to honour the legacy of Brian ( Bonzo) Byrne on Saturday 14th November 2026 at 2.30pm at the club.

Brian made a significant contribution to both Dundalk RFC and his home club, Arklow RFC, with his involvement in rugby extending well beyond Leinster. During his time as a senior player with Dundalk, he made a valuable contribution on the pitch and continued to support the club in a variety of roles off it.

He coached teams at all levels, served as 1st XV Team Manager and Touch Judge, and was Club President. He also played a key role in developing Dundalk RFC’s current transformation project, which will receive further support through this commemorative event.

Dundalk RFC said: “Brian’s dedication, leadership and deep love for the game shaped the spirit of our club . His legacy will endure in every corner of the Mill Road and in the hearts of all who had the privilege of knowing him.

“We will be joined by current players, past players, partners, parents, sponsors and friends of the Dundalk Rugby Family as we join the Byrne Family, Emma, Avril, Simon, Megan and their extended Family for one of the clubs most special events to date in the club calendar.

“With an incredible line up including former Leinster, Irish and British and Irish Lions Player Shane Byrne, Brian’s nephew it promises to be a spectacular evening. There will be a Silent Auction with some amazing items including a Coaching Session with the legendary Kearney Brothers Rob and Dave whose rugby journeys began as Minis at the Mill Road and whose support and loyalty to the club has been steadfast through their rise to success on the world stage. There will be a Monster Raffle with fabulous prizes with all funds invested in the current club transformation project which was driven by Bonzo prior to his untimely passing last year.

“It is a sell out event which is a testament to the legacy left behind by Bonzo and while it will be a day tinged with raw emotion it will be a day when we will celebrate the real meaning of club rugby, celebrating its greatest success the people it helps develop and the most important pathway at Mill Road that has been offered has been one that develops good people, builds friendships and creates lifelong connections with and by individuals such as Brian( Bonzo) Byrne who espouse the true values of rugby.”
