Significant improvement works are planned for the Long Walk in Dundalk, with full road resurfacing, new bus stops and enhanced pedestrian facilities now confirmed.
Local Fianna Fail councillor Seán Kelly has issued an update from Louth County Council’s Area Engineer’s Office, outlining an expanded scope of works.
Originally, plans had been limited to resurfacing the T-junction at the IMC Cinema. However, following a detailed assessment, engineers determined that the road surface along a much wider stretch of the Long Walk is in “very poor condition” and requires comprehensive renewal.
In addition to the resurfacing works, the council is seeking funding from the National Transport Authority (NTA) to install two official bus stops along the Long Walk. The locations have been identified by the NTA as regular stopping points for Local Link services.
If approved, the funding will also support the installation of new and upgraded tactile pedestrian crossings.
Particular attention will also be given to sections of footpath that have deteriorated due to tree root damage, especially near the public car parks. These uneven surfaces have caused ongoing difficulties for people with mobility issues.
Given the level of activity around Dundalk Bus Station and Long Walk Tesco, it is anticipated that the resurfacing works will need to take place at night to minimise disruption to traffic and businesses.
The Road Works Programme (RWP) tender is expected to go to market in the coming weeks, with works likely to commence in the third quarter of 2026.

Separately, improvement works will begin next week on the damaged overhead barriers at the entrances to the public car parks in the Long Walk area. The existing red-brick piers and barriers are set to be replaced with a more modern, less visually intrusive system.
New line marking and general upgrades to the car park entrances will also form part of these works.
