A Dundalk family is appealing for support after their lives were turned upside down by a sudden and serious illness. Darren White and his wife Nicola are currently facing an unimaginable challenge following Nicola’s diagnosis of Stage 4 bowel cancer earlier this year.

Nicola became seriously unwell while pregnant with their son, Jake, and what was initially thought to be a minor health issue quickly escalated into a life-threatening condition. Since her diagnosis, Nicola has undergone major surgeries and intensive treatments.

Their son, Jake, arrived earlier than expected and has spent his first months in hospital. Darren describes his son’s progress as “growing stronger each day,” and praises Nicola for her resilience and unwavering love. “Despite everything, she continues to amaze everyone around her with her resilience and love for our little boy.,” he says.

The family has faced additional challenges, including the financial strain of hospital stays, travel costs, and everyday living expenses. Both Darren and Nicola have been unable to work since the summer, depleting their savings.

The family now hopes to make necessary changes to their home to support Nicola’s recovery and prepare for when she and Jake can finally be together at home. Plans include creating a comfortable living space downstairs and making adaptations to help with her care.

Darren said: “We’re not people who find it easy to ask for help, but right now, we need it. Any support you can offer — whether it’s a donation, a share, or simply a kind message — will make a huge difference and help us focus on what truly matters: Nicola’s recovery and time together as a family.”

A GoFundMe page has been set up to help cover medical expenses and home adaptations. The family has expressed heartfelt gratitude for any support received from the community.
