A new working committee has been established by Dundalk Municipal District to tackle ongoing issues at St Patrick’s Cemetery in Dowdallshill.
Formed in response to a growing number of public concerns, the committee—comprising five local councillors—aims to address both immediate maintenance needs and long-term improvements at the historic graveyard.
With the annual blessing of the graves approaching on Sunday, July 20th, the group’s initial focus is on ensuring the cemetery is properly maintained ahead of the event.
Initially this committee will be made up of five councillors Cllr Robert Nash, Cllr Marianne Butler, Cllr Sean Kelly, Cllr Maeve Yore and Cllr Sionann McCann.
The committee said it was their hope to add other interested stakeholders to the group in the near future such as undertakers, monumental contractors, members of the clergy, as well as senior officials from Louth County Council.
The purpose of this group will be to address operational and maintenance issues which have been brought to the attention to public representatives by members of the public.
In the last week, this new committee has met on site with Louth County Council officials and discussed short, medium, and long term works, which need to be undertaken to improve the overall landscape of St Patrick's cemetery.
With the annual blessing of the graves upcoming on Sunday July 20th, the general upkeep of the graveyard is the working groups number one priority at the minute.
However, following on from the annual patron the committee hope to sit down with all interested stakeholders and listen to wider concerns in relation to Dowdallshill Graveyard.
"We will keep the public updated with any progress on these issues," they said.
