Sanctions have been imposed following the disorder that overshadowed the SSE Airtricity Men’s Premier Division clash between Dundalk FC and Drogheda United FC at Oriel Park last week.

Many pyrotechnic devices were ignited and thrown during the game, which resulted in an injury to a minor and substantial damage to the ground.

An Independent Disciplinary Committee of the Football Association of Ireland has fined Drogheda United €15,000, the highest levy ever issued in the League of Ireland for a pyrotechnics incident.

Drogheda supporters are banned from the club’s next four away fixtures and from attending any further games at Oriel Park for the remainder of the 2026 season.

The FAI and the League of Ireland reiterated that pyrotechnics are strictly prohibited at all fixtures and warned that further breaches could result in stadium closures or points deductions.

CCTV will become mandatory at all league grounds, enhanced detection measures, including specialist canine units will be introduced, and those involved face ejection and stadium bans.

Minister for Culture, Communications and Sport, Patrick O'Donovan, said, “Let’s not forget that a child was injured here, and it could have been far worse.

“I welcome the outcome of the FAI’s independent disciplinary committee unit (DCU) this evening. I commend the FAI and the LOI for acting swiftly and decisively, and I appreciate them taking this matter so seriously.

“I have instructed full, normal engagement resume between my Department and the FAI together with the League on foot of this significant disciplinary action.”
