The Dromiskin 5K took place around the roads of the mid-Louth Village on Saturday evening last.

The weather which the village had of thunder, lightning and torrential rain earlier in the evening didn’t deter the participants that came in their droves, and as in the previous years, the rain stopped and the sun came out.

The only lightning that remained was that from men’s race winner Ballina AC Hugh Armstrong in a new course record of 14.22, shaving just one second of the previous record, the Ace AC duo of Lorcan Forde Dunne in a time of 14.49 and Danny Nugent in a time of 14.52 in hot pursuit as was Rahenny AC man Kieran Kelly in a time of 14.54.

The first four men were all well under the 15-minute benchmark. The women’s race was won by Finn Valley AC athlete Amy Greene in an impressive sub-17-minute time of 16.48, closely followed by St Peter’s own Abbie Sheriden in a time of 16.59.

East Down AC’s Catherine O’Connor came in third in a time of 17.11. The men’s junior (U20) winner was John Hanley from Glasslough Harriers in a time of 15.43, with Matthew Sutton from Newcastle & District in a time of 16.32.

The women’s junior winners consisted of the familiar duo of St Peter’s Dearbhla Allen in a time of 17.21 and Ace AC athlete Eimear Cooney in a time of 17.51.

There were age category prizes also awarded, with Eimear McCracken taking first in the women’s over 40 and Aoife Parrella in 2nd.

Paul Smith from Drogheda & District took the honours in the men’s over 40, followed by his clubmate Rodney Thornton. The women’s over 50 was won by Carrick Aces athlete Ann O’Rourke, and in 2nd was Lorna Cunningham from Newcastle & District.

Vincent McQuillan from Ardee & District took the men’s over 50, with Shane Carroll in 2nd. The women over 60 was won by Anita Bolton of North East Runners, with Patrica Brown of Newry City Runners in 2nd.

Brian Lynch of North East Runners was the winner in the men’s over 60, with Bohermeen AC athlete David O’Connell in 2nd.

The team honours went to Ace AC in the men’s with Lorcan Forde Dunne, Danny Nugent, Daniel Hanley and Eoin O’Grainne and the host club St Peter’s AC taking the women’s with Abbie Sheriden, Dearbhla Allen, Niamh Brady and Ella Murphy.

The event has once again grown in popularity, with a total of 889 finishers, and is a well-respected race on the local calendar.
