In another wet weekend across Leinster, the first and third teams once again had matches abandoned, on Saturday the 30th in Hiney Park and Ringcommons respectively.

With downpours expected in the afternoon, the Dundalk and Kilkenny captains agreed to start play early and reduce the game to 30 overs a side to better the chances of a result. Dundalk lost the toss and were asked to field first.

In a chaotic first 15 overs, Dundalk restricted Kilkenny’s run-rate well but made a plethora of mistakes in the field, with several catches dropped.

Fielders in the deep blamed the gusty conditions for the ball’s trajectory changing in the air, making high catches difficult to take.

Mohammad Emran once again took the reins for the town, effecting a direct-hit run-out before drinks and taking two catches and a dismissal of his own afterwards.

A flurry of wickets in the last ten overs saw Kilkenny’s last 7 batters fall for just 18 runs. Targeting 168 to win, Dundalk’s batting chase was broken up initially by several heavy rain showers.

The change in conditions did not faze wicket-keeper Shibu Uthaman, who put together a couple of solid partnerships from number three, hitting nine boundaries on his way to an impressive 65 off 47 balls.

Captain Jiwan Jodhani and all-rounder Amal Soman closed the innings out well with a 41-run stand to win the game with an over to spare.

Dundalk 2’s fate now lies in the hands of a couple of teams below them in the table with games in hand, but remain hot favourites to avoid the drop to Division 19, currently sitting in fifth position.

Next weekend’s league fixtures: Swords 5 v Dundalk 3 (Division 20, Sun 14 Sep, away). Interested in getting involved in cricket? Visit www.dundalkcricket.com or email contact@dundalkcricket.com
