Their adventure began with a moment of national pride, as the Dundalk players were selected to carry the Irish flag at Monday night’s opening ceremony.
Grouped alongside Swedish opposition in Group 28, Dundalk wasted no time making their presence known.
Game One – Dundalk 7-0 Mjölby AI/FF
In their opening fixture on Monday, Dundalk were in scintillating form as they cruised to a 7-0 victory over Mjölby AI/FF. Ardee Celtic’s Danny Leavy got things rolling with a goal inside 20 seconds, setting the tone for what was to come.
Bellurgan United’s Luke McGovern doubled the lead barely two minutes later, and Tim Varshytskyi of Rock Celtic added a third to cap off a dominant first half.
However, the standout moment came in the second half as Bellurgan’s Eoghan Mullen stole the spotlight with a stunning four-goal haul. Dundalk’s dominance from the first whistle to the last left the Swedish side shell-shocked.
Game Two – Dundalk 7-0 BK Kenty
Less than 24 hours later, the Dundalk boys replicated their performance with another 7-0 win, this time over BK Kenty.
Quay Celtic’s Cian Cunningham captained the side and led by example, scoring early in the second minute. Ardee Celtic’s Oran Lynch added a second soon after, and Dundalk never looked back.
The second-half scoring spree featured goals from Thomas Quinlivan, Danny Leavy, Shane Whitmarsh, and a brace from Dylan Halpin, capping another ruthless display in front of goal.
Game Three – Dundalk 0-0 Sandarna BK
Wednesday morning brought a sterner test as Dundalk battled Swedish outfit Sandarna BK in their final group game. Despite a 9am kickoff and soaring temperatures, the team dug deep to earn a hard-fought 0-0 draw, enough to see them top the group.
Captain Callum Markey led with composure and resilience, while Cian Cunningham fought tirelessly in midfield. Luke McGovern thought he’d snatched a late winner, only to see his effort chalked off for offside.
Playoff A – Dundalk 3-1 Makedonikos FC
Progressing to the knockout stages, Dundalk were drawn against Greek side Makedonikos FC on Thursday. Despite going behind in the first half, the boys came out revitalised after the break, and it was Tim Varshytskyi who stole the show.
The Rock Celtic forward bagged a sensational perfect hat trick, left foot, right foot, and header, to power Dundalk to a 3-1 victory and a place in the last 32.
Knockout Round - Dundalk 1-1 Athletico SC (Athletico win 7-6 on penalties)
Just hours later, Dundalk faced Athletico SC from Lebanon in a tightly contested second-round clash. Though the Lebanese side took the lead against the run of play, Dundalk showed immense character, levelling with four minutes to go through Eoghan Mullen, once again assisted by teammate Luke McGovern.
With the score locked at 1-1, the match was decided by penalties. In a cruel twist, Dundalk came out on the wrong end of a 7-6 shootout, bringing their remarkable journey to an emotional close.
