DDL Fyffes Premier Division
Muirhevnamor FC 1-1 Shamrocks
Venue: Muirhevnamor. Date: 1.10.24.
Muirhevnamor clinched the 100th league title in the history of the Dundalk and District League with a comeback goal by ace poacher Micky O'Kane, in the 70th minute of a closely fought match.
They now await the McConville Cup final on the 12th of October against Bellurgan United to see if they can complete their 6th clean sweep of trophies, their first coming in 2007.
After the first 45 minutes which only had two outstanding saves from the visitor's netminder to brighten the dual proceedings, the game caught fire midway through the second half, the ignited spark coming from Robbie Mackin's close-range shot that put Shamrocks a goal up.
The home side, knowing a draw would suffice to win the league piled on the pressure and were rewarded when Micky O'Kane's header found the net in the 70th minute.
Soon after, Shamrocks had a player sent off by referee Wayne Doyle. Close to the final whistle two more visiting players were dismissed, leaving Shamrocks with 8 players to finish their season.
This was O'Kanes 11th strike in all competitions, leaving him trailing Dean Browne of Shamrocks by three goals in the goal-scoring charts. Secretary of the League, Gussie Hearty, presented Muirhevnamor captain Connal Mulvenna with the historic league trophy.
Since season 2002 Muirhevnamor have won a record 14 championships the nearest clubs to them with wins are: Rangers 10 Quay 8, St Patricks 9 and Bank 5.
