A 46-year-old man caught speeding at 175km/hr on the M1 has been banned from driving for a year at Dundalk District Court.

Lukasz Janiak with an address at Aghaboys House, Ballymascanlon, Dundalk was charged with dangerous driving at Drumleck, Castlebellingham arising out of the detection on February 4th last.

The Defence solicitor, who told the court last Wednesday that the facts were accepted, said it was an absolutely outrageous speed on what is an always busy road.

He added that his client's employment relies on his licence, and he could have contested the case, he didn't want to drag it out and was entering a guilty plea.

The solicitor said he had had a firm and frank conversation with him and the fact that he was arrested was a real eye opener for the defendant.

Judge Nicola Andrews said the 46-year-old may not have much regard for his own personal safety but it could have catastrophic for other road users if he had crashed at that speed.

She imposed a €101 fine along with a two year disqualification and fixed recognizance of his own bond of €100 if an appeal is lodged.
