During An Garda Síochána’s nationwide road safety operation over the St Patrick’s Bank Holiday Weekend, a motorist in Dundalk was caught travelling at 124 km/h in an 80 km/h zone on the R178 in Redbog.

Tragically, six (6) people lost their lives in road traffic collisions over the course of the operation. This brings the total number of road fatalities this year to 38—an increase of six compared to the same date last year.

As part of this operation, Gardaí carried out both statutory Mandatory Intoxicant Testing (MIT) and regular, high-visibility policing checkpoints.

A total of 235 individuals were arrested for driving under the influence of an intoxicant (alcohol or drugs).

Over the course of the operation, in excess of 5,000 motorists were detected for speeding offences.
