An uninsured driver who drove dangerously while being pursued by gardaí, had 'panicked' on seeing them, Dundalk district court was told last week

Tyler Chiduza of College Manor, Dundalk was charged with dangerous driving at Townspark and Marshes Upper, Dundalk and driving without insurance or a driving licence on St. Alphonsus Road, Dundalk on May 6th last year.

The investigating garda gave evidence of being on mobile patrol shortly after midnight, when he saw a black VW Golf driving through a car park at speed on to Dublin Street.

It turned left at Hill Street Bridge and broke a red traffic light at the Tom Bellew Avenue junction on the Avenue Road before it turned onto St. Alphonsus Road, where the car hit a traffic island and collided with a sign on the other side of the road.

It had also swerved numerous times across road markings.

The Defence solicitor said his client, who took out insurance two weeks later, had panicked when he saw the guards but stressed that he was “quite sober”.

He added that Mr Chiduza was at a loss, as he wasn't able to afford to repair the car.

Judge Nicola Jane Andrews imposed 120 hours community service in lieu of a three month sentence and a €105 fine for one of the dangerous driving charges, along with a four year disqualification.

Two further fines of €105 each were imposed for driving without a licence and driving without insurance.

A concurrent four year driving ban was also imposed for the insurance offence.
