An Garda Síochána has updated its Physical Competency Test on the back of an external review carried out by Dr Michael McCorry from the Department of Humanities at Dundalk Institute of Technology
A review of the Garda Physical Competency Test began during summer 2024, to ensure that the test achieved the best result for the requirements of being a member of An Garda Síochána.
As of last year around one in six applicants were failing the test and one of the key changes under the new model includes the removal of push-ups and sit-ups.
The review was assisted by Garda Trainers from the Garda College and Operational members and has been trialled and validated by hundreds of Operational Gardaí and Garda Trainees.
Gardai said that the, “Physical Competency Test continues to provide An Garda Síochána with a reassurance that prospective Garda Trainee candidates possess the acceptable level of pre-employment physical fitness/ competence.”
The new Physical Competency Test comes into effect immediately, for all Garda Applicants currently in the application process and going forward for applicants in the current 2025 campaign and future campaigns.

The updated test has two components which are a 20-metre beep test, immediately followed by an obstacle course.
The beep test lasts for four minutes and 54 seconds, while two circuits of the obstacle course must be completed in under three minutes and 10 seconds.
Applicants must complete both components in under eight minutes and four seconds in total. The combined pass time applies to all candidates regardless of age and gender.
The obstacle course includes a sprint start, weaving through cones, walking along a balance beam, lifting and carrying a car wheel, going under a barrier, a one-metre jump, a push and pull test, running up and down stairs, and a 10-metre sprint.
