Culture Night events around Carlingford Lough

The celebration will be hosted by the Shifting Tides project

From comedy improv to seaweed foraging, on Culture Night (Friday 20 September) Warrenpoint’s Town Hall will be the focal point of a lively celebration of the culture and ecology of Carlingford Lough. The celebration will be hosted by the Shifting Tides project, a Culture Ireland-funded cross-border initiative that connects coastal communities from the twin shores of the Lough Carlingford Lough.
Speaking ahead of the Culture Night event, Shifting Tides Programme Director, Suzie Cahn said:
“We have something for everyone, from live comedy improv and the screening of a short film about Carlingford Lough, to a multi-sensory exhibition of sound, movement, film, images, stories and sculpture - all inspired by life in, around and under the surface of the Lough.”
A highlight of the evening will be a live comedy improv performance by We Built This City on Rock and Coal, a theatre group that will bring their irresistible blend of unscripted science and comedy theatre to Warrenpoint. Their interactive show will include inputs from climate experts, and the audience is invited to join an optional sustainability workshop after the show.
The series of events will start at 4 pm with a seaweed forage walk on the shore near Warrenpoint Hall with forager, illustrator, and musician, Samuel Arnold Keane. This will be followed by a multi-media exhibition and talks by artist and storyteller Steve Lally, and the screening of a new short film Body of Water which follows the journey of women swimming in Carlingford Lough.
Poetry and voice-overs from the swimmers share their profound bond with water. The film asks that we consider the essential link between a healthy environment and our well-being.
Also included will be a short excerpt of an ongoing documentary about some of Carlingford's scuba divers’ journeys from hobby divers to Citizen Scientists excerpts from the Shifting Tides podcast currently in production and a few other surprises too.
"Shifting Tides is about more than just enjoying the beauty of Carlingford Lough; it's about building a community that is actively engaged in the preservation and celebration of our natural and cultural heritage. We encourage everyone anyone to join us on Culture Night to celebrate the wonder of the Lough,” said Suzie Cahn.
Shifting Tides’ Culture Night events are all free to attend but booking is essential at www.theshiftingtides.org/events or search Shifting Tides on Eventbrite.
