Taoiseach Leo Varadkar has given a commitment to invest in the proposed Narrow Water Bridge set to connect the Cooley Peninsula to Warrenpoint.

Listing cross border initiatives during his keynote address at the 3rd Shared Island Forum in Dublin Castle yesterday, the Taoiseach said:

“We will also invest in the Narrow Water Bridge to link the Mourne Mountains in Co. Down with the Cooley Peninsula in Co. Louth.

“This will be good for tourism and bring significant economic benefits, but it will also create new opportunities and deepen connections between communities on both sides of the border.

“It will be a powerful symbol of what can be achieved.”

The project is listed on Louth County Council’s  three-year Capital programme for 2024-2026 and it is expected the contractor will be on site at some point this year.

In what could signal good news for Dundalk commuters, the Taoiseach also stated that an hourly rail connection between Dublin and Belfast was an agreed objective for both Administrations north and south, to better link cities and communities.

“This will bring significant opportunities for education, for tourism and for business,” he said.
