Local Louth Senator Alison Comyn says she was ‘honoured and proud’ to attend the recent launch of the BabyTalk Initiative, a programme that was pioneered in Our Lady of Lourdes hospital.
Launched by the HSE in Bettystown Library, BabyTalk aims to improve language development for all babies admitted to neonatal intensive care units (NICUs) through the simple yet powerful practices of singing, reading, and talking.
“As someone deeply committed to giving every child the best possible start in life, I can’t begin to tell you the importance of this programme. Having followed BabyTalk from its earliest days in Drogheda through my work as a regional journalist, it is especially meaningful to now support its nationwide rollout as a member of Seanad Éireann,” says Senator Comyn.
“The evidence is clear: exposure to singing, reading, and talking supports language, literacy, and social-emotional skills, while also enhancing neurodevelopmental outcomes and strengthening both infant and parental mental health. For premature or unwell infants—who face a higher risk of developmental delays—this early intervention is vital”.
Local families who had experienced the NICU journey shared their stories at the launch, highlighting the importance of empowering parents with simple, accessible tools to connect with their babies during such a critical time.
“The involvement of local libraries is another wonderful element, ensuring support continues beyond the hospital. The initiative in Louth and Meath, where each NICU baby was given a library membership upon discharge, is an inspiring example of how community services can extend the benefits of BabyTalk into homes across Ireland,” adds the Fianna Fáil senator.

“I want to pay tribute to Deirdre Bradley, BabyTalk Co-Ordinator and National HSCP Innovation Fellow, Maura Daly and librarian Ruth O'Rourke, and all those involved in expanding this initiative. Their dedication will have a lasting impact on premature babies and their families nationwide."
The recent launch marks the beginning of a journey that will grow across Ireland’s 19 NICUs.
“I am proud to support BabyTalk and look forward to seeing its positive effects for generations to come,” she concluded.
