'How am I going to explain this?' - Davy Russell recalls hilarious 3am run-in with gardaí

Former top jockey Davy Russell recalled a wild tale and run-in with gardaí during his interview on the 2 Johnnies' Late Night Lock In show on RTE on Thursday night.

The Cork jockey was chatting about his career with the Tipperary comedy duo when he recounted the story.

Davy explained how he is always the designated driver as he doesn't drink: "I'm always driving, the lads are always drinking," he explained as he remembered a night out with friends and fellow jockeys Davy Condon and Martin Ferris.

"We always end up somewhere funny, somewhere quare, something strange always happens. We ended up in Tallow, we were living in Cashel, so we were going over the Vee, even though bad aul roads, the boys had a couple of drinks in them and they had to stop on top of the Vee.

"So they were standing up off the edge of the Vee, big cliff, and Davy Condon decided it would be funny to kick Martin Ferris off the side. Martin rolled down the side of the mountain and we were all laughing and saying, 'come on, Martin, let's go. He came back up, he was covered in sheep faeces. He had rolled into a dead sheep," Davy explained as the audience gasped and laughed.

He went on to say: "I'm there with my car, and I'm looking at it and saying, 'Martin there is no way you're getting into this car dressed like that. So, we stripped him, put all his clothes into the boot, threw away some of them and he was sitting in the back of the car stark naked.

"You know that when you come down the Vee, you know the road into Cahir, it's a one-way street, and we were going the wrong way down the one-way street, it was a shortcut. You couldn't write this, it's three in the morning, no one around, we went to shoot down, next thing blue lights.

"I'm sitting in the car and I'm thinking to myself, 'how am I going to explain this; Davy Condon was asleep beside me, Martin Ferris was stark naked in the back of the car. I rolled down the window of my 1987 Toyota Starlet and I said guard, 'I promise you, it's not what it seems to be.'"

Davy said: "He [the garda] looked in the back, Martin was just smiling, no clothes on him, Davy Condon was starting to wake up and the guard said, 'I actually don't have enough paper in my notepad."
