Dundalk IT student films to screen at local arts centres

As part of the ongoing collaboration between An Táin Arts Centre, Droichead Arts Centre and the Department of Creative Arts, Media & Music at DkIT, films created by last year’s students on the year-long Film Project module on the BA (Hons) in Film & Television Production will be screened as part of the Spring Film Seasons in both Art Centres.

The series of student films will be shown before the spring programmes in each arts until Tuesday 29th April.

The films include Saoirse, written and directed by Sarah Grey, which follows a young Irish woman struggles with finding her life path while feeling like she is being left behind by her group of friends; Echo, written and directed by Lauren Corlett, which explores how a mysterious mirror appears in Mia's life allowing the user to switch places with their own reflection; Brother, written and directed by Tom Johnson, which documents a shy, introverted teenager Jordan who struggles to come to terms with the recent loss of his older brother Liam and Biddy, written and directed by Hope Darcy, which follows Charlie, who is struggling with the impact of his wife’s dementia and seeks reminders of the past.

Paul Hayes, Director, An Táin Arts Centre, Dundalk said: “An Táin Arts is delighted to be showcasing these 4 films by film students at DkIT continuing are collaboration with the college which includes film students presenting our autumn films annually. We hope to see many of these films in The Louth International Film Festival which we host each September.”

“We are delighted to showcase short films made by students from DKIT Film and Production programme. Supporting artists is a key part of Droichead’s strategy 2022-2026, and screening these shorts means we are supporting the film makers of the future.”

On the year-long Film Project module in 3rd year, students conceive and write scripts for short films and throughout the year, work in groups following an industry-standard production process. During development and pre-production, this includes weekly production meetings, fundraising, sourcing & organising locations, casting, sourcing props, dressing, costumes, script readings, creating risk assessments and scheduling shoots.

Shoots took place across the region in February and March 2024 and after that student engaged with picture and audio post-production with continuous feedback from their lecturers Sarah McCann, Eamonn Crudden, Lorcan Dunne, Marina Hughes, Kevin Cunnane and Richie Price. Projects were initially screened at the Film Showcase which took place in May 2024 at the IMC. Since then, students have been submitting their films to festivals in Ireland and abroad.
