Louth man to walk Camino in memory of his late father

Sam Bingham is organizing this fundraiser to benefit Gary Kelly Cancer Support Centre

A Louth man is set to embark on a heartfelt journey along the Camino de Santiago in Spain to honour his late father, Declan Bingham, affectionately known as Decky, and to raise funds for the Gary Kelly Cancer Support Centre in Drogheda.

Declan passed away last year at the age of 57 after a sudden and aggressive battle with cancer. He was a dedicated nurse for over 30 years and a passionate supporter of local sports, spending much of his time coaching and encouraging young athletes both in Ardee and Dublin. Declan was also a devoted family man, leaving behind his loving wife Sinead, five children, and two grandchildren.

His son, Sam Bingham has pledged to walk 110km of the Camino de Santiago from March 25th to 29th marking the anniversary of his passing.

“The diagnosis came as a sudden shock, both to my dad and to us, his family,” Sam shared.

During this incredibly difficult time, Decky received invaluable support from the Gary Kelly Cancer Support Centre in Drogheda. This amazing organization provides a wide range of services and support to people affected by cancer, and my dad often spoke of how much the Centre’s assistance meant to him during his illness.”

Declan had originally planned to walk the Camino himself alongside his longtime friend, Hugh.

Sam is appealing to the community to support him on his journey with donations going directly to the Gary Kelly Cancer Support Centre.
