Louth nursing home praised for standards in HIQA inspection

The report highlights that residents at Moorehall Lodge Ardee enjoy a high quality of life

Moorehall Lodge Ardee has been commended for its commitment to maintaining a high standard of care and reducing restrictive practices following an unannounced inspection by the Health Information and Quality Authority (HIQA). The inspection, which took place on December 2, 2024, assessed the nursing home’s compliance with national standards for residential care settings for older people in Ireland.

The report highlights that residents at Moorehall Lodge Ardee enjoy a high quality of life, with minimal use of restrictive practices. During the inspection, residents expressed satisfaction with the level of care provided, stating that their rights were respected and that they had freedom of movement. The use of restrictive practices has been significantly reduced, with only one resident using bedrails, while alternatives such as sensor mats have become the preferred option. Residents are free to come and go as long as they alert staff of their plans, with staff facilitating outings and social activities, including regular trips and Christmas shopping excursions. Secure internal courtyards are accessible at all times, providing a safe and welcoming space for both residents and visitors.

Visitors are welcomed at Moorehall Lodge Ardee without restrictions, with entry controlled via a front doorbell and sign-in system at reception. Residents also have full access to privacy within their own rooms, which they are encouraged to personalise with their belongings. Each room includes lockable storage to secure valuables, ensuring peace of mind for residents.

A diverse range of activities is offered, helping to keep residents engaged and socially active. Many spoke positively about the regular visits from local community groups, including the Legion of Mary and school children who visit weekly. Live music performances, exercise classes, and dog therapy sessions are also scheduled frequently, while religious services are easily accessible both in-house and via live-streamed broadcasts.

The centre’s management team has implemented a self-assessment process to monitor restrictive practices and has established a dedicated restrictive practice committee that meets monthly to assess and further reduce restrictions. A comprehensive restraints policy ensures that any restrictive measures used are proportionate and remain the least restrictive option available.

Regular audits and quality improvement plans have been put in place to track restraint use, ensuring that any necessary practices are well-documented and continually reassessed. Staff training has also been a key focus, with employees receiving education on human rights, advocacy, and assisted decision-making to ensure they understand the impact of restrictive practices and how best to support residents’ autonomy.

HIQA’s overall judgment found Moorehall Lodge Ardee to be fully compliant with national standards, particularly in the areas of person-centred care, safety, and governance. Residents are well-informed about their rights, with clear access to complaints procedures and advocacy services. Many residents confirmed that they feel supported in their daily choices, including the ability to vote, attend religious services, and maintain personal relationships.
