Dundalk Schoolboys League U15 League

St. Dominic's 6-0 Quay Athletic

Joseph Byrne was the hat-trick hero for St. Dominic’s U15s in Wednesday night’s win over Quay Athletic at the Friary Field.

The hosts were at their ruthless best, having suffered a heavy defeat in their opening game away to Quay Celtic the previous Saturday, and were full value for the three points.

Kyle Schiavone opened St. Dominic’s account just six minutes in after a defence splitting pass by Eddie Territt sent him clear of the Quay defence and Joseph Byrne slotted home his first of the night just eight minutes later to double the home advantage.

It was a tough opening period for the Quay side, but they showed good determination and but for dogged defending and some superb saves from Seán Cassidy in the away goal, the half-time lead would have been greater.

Cassidy produced a magnificent save on 23 minutes to push away Byrne’s close-range header after a pinpoint corner by Jack McBride and the Quay ‘keeper denied McBride moments later with another flying save.

The Clancy Park team’s best chance of the opening half fell to Liam McGrath just before the break, but he was denied by McBride’s timely block at the near post.

Quay still believed they could get back into the game in the second half and they produced a couple of chances to do so.

Firstly, McGrath’s long-range effort was well-saved by Conor McHugh three minutes after the re-start and then Daniel Crawley burst through the Dominic’s defence, but he was denied by a last-ditch tackle from the solid James Bodunrin.

Feidheilm O’Callaghan never stopped working in midfield for the visitors, but he could do nothing to prevent the home side extending their lead after Territt’s free-kick found Byrne who fired home a low drive from the edge of the box.

Rowan Harmon then made it 4-0 when his left footed strike flew into the top corner and shortly after Byrne completed his hat-trick when he outpaced the Quay defence to drill the ball past the stranded Cassidy.

Jack Daly added a sixth goal in the final minute with a superb strike, giving Cassidy no chance.
