Every Saturday morning for the past 11 months in DKIT sports grounds the gates open to volunteers and park runners in all weathers to run, jog or walk the 5km route.

Parkun is community run for the community and is a free timed run which has become popular since we started June 2015.

Carmel Drumgoole set up the event with the support of Derek Crilly, DKIT, Louth Sports Partnership, and Tesco Extra, Dundalk.

Their support helped fund the set up phase and it has been up to the core group with the help of the weekly volunteers to continue running the event.

“We have had seen great results and fitness levels improve across the board as parkun is open to all age groups and abilities,” says a spokesperson for the run.

“Through out the year we have had a fantastic fancy dress appeal for Halloween as well as Christmas. January saw the start of Operation Transformation , with local lady Mary Maher becoming Dundalk's Ambassador and with her help we had huge numbers turn up for the series with lots of people getting out and active.

“Unfortunately in February Carmel the event director emigrated to Canada with Sarah Mc Eneaney taking over. Carmel is currently in the process of setting up parkrun in Canada now becoming a global leader. Huge congrats to Carmel as her determination as her hard work continues abroad. On the 4th of June Dundalk parkrun will celebrate its first anniversary and would like to welcome everyone to run, jog, walk, volunteer or even come and support the park runners. We will be having cake, tea/coffee and also will present the prizes for our yearly points competition.”

Anyone can register for free at www.parkrun.ie/register/ and print off their personal barcode which they need every week to receive their result. For more information see our facebook page or our website www.parkrun.ie/
