Dundalk FC 1-0 Shamrock Rovers

Dundalk FC produced another stirring chapter in their remarkable return to the SSE Airtricity League Premier Division, as Tyreke Wilson’s superb late strike earned a deserved 1-0 victory over Shamrock Rovers at Oriel Park.

The result may have halted the leaders’ momentum, but not their grip on first place, with Rovers still three points clear at the summit. For newly-promoted Dundalk, however, this was further evidence that their place in the top four is no accident.

As expected, the visitors began with authority. John McGovern forced Enda Minogue into an early save with a low drive that the Dundalk goalkeeper turned around the post after eight minutes.

From Jack Byrne’s ensuing corner, Enda Stevens headed wide as Rovers sought an early breakthrough.

Michael Noonan then blazed over from distance, though Dundalk gradually settled after weathering the opening quarter-hour and finished the half as the stronger side.

Aodh Dervin’s muted penalty appeals after a challenge involving Ed McGinty came and went, but the home side soon threatened in more tangible fashion.

Keith Buckley dispossessed Lee Grace deep inside the Rovers half before Gbemi Arubi, spotting McGinty off his line, attempted an audacious lob that drifted narrowly over.

Dundalk carved out an even clearer opening shortly afterwards. Eoin Kenny skipped beyond Dan Cleary with a deft nutmeg to race through on goal, only to direct a disappointing finish straight at McGinty.

Rovers remained dangerous in flashes. Five minutes before the interval, Arsenal-bound Victor Ozhianvuna burst clear of both Kenny and Buckley before curling an effort inches wide.

Dervin responded at the other end by firing over from outside the area with the final chance of the half.

Stephen Bradley introduced Aaron Greene for the second period, and the veteran forward almost made an immediate impact, steering narrowly wide after intelligent hold-up play from Ozhianvuna.

Byrne then delivered another dangerous set-piece from the left, but Grace headed wide at the back post.

Dundalk, though, continued to carry threat in transition. Harvey Warren surged forward after being afforded far too much space, only for McGinty to produce a sharp save from the angle.

The breakthrough finally arrived 12 minutes from time, and it was worthy of deciding any contest.

Substitute Shane Tracey sparked the move before Daryl Horgan delivered from the right.

Tyreke Wilson met the cross first time and arrowed an exquisite finish beyond McGinty to ignite Oriel Park.

The closing stages were fraught for the hosts. JR Wilson was dismissed after collecting a second yellow card for bringing down Matthew Healy on the edge of the area.

Dylan Watts’ resulting free-kick was expertly turned behind by Minogue, who was only beginning his defining contribution.

In the closing minute of normal time, Ozhianvuna’s cross was headed back across goal by Jake Mulraney, and Grace appeared certain to equalise from close range, only for Minogue to somehow claw away the defender’s header with a stunning reflex stop.

There was still time for one final act of resistance. Deep into stoppage time, Mulraney’s delivery was headed against the post by Watts before Graham Burke looked poised to salvage a point.

Minogue spread himself brilliantly to deny him and seal a victory that sent Oriel Park into raptures.
