John O'Neill Sand & Gravel Division 1

ST MOCHTAS 1-12

NEWTOWN BLUES 1-10

St Mochtas came through a tight encounter at Newfoundwell to increase their lead at the top of the table to six points.

The Blues went into Saturday night’s game hoping to cut the gap at the summit but despite a strong second half display, they were unable to stop the rampant Louth Village side.

The Drogheda men suffered an early setback when they lost Conor Ni Criosta to a black card but managed to match the Mochtas for much of the half. Andy McDonnell, Ross Nally and Ni Criosta were on target for the Blues but a goal from Shane Lennon sent the visitors in at the break with a 1-7 to 0-6 lead.

The Blues responded well in the second half with points from Daire Nally (3) and Jack Healy, along with a goal from Ross Nally to get back into the game.

However, Declan Byrne brought his total to five points for the night, while Gerry Garland and Janie Farrell finished with two apiece to help the Mochtas over the line.

ST PATRICKS 1-11

SEAN O’MAHONYS 1-6

St Patricks moved into joint second place in the table following this five-point win over Sean O’Mahonys at the Point Road on Saturday, on a night when both teams finished with 13 players.

The visitors had the edge throughout the contest but were grateful for the efforts of Martin McEneaney who made three excellent stops over the hour, including a penalty save at a crucial stage at the start of the second half.

It was the home side who opened the scoring inside a minute but Eoin O’Connor quickly took the game by the scruff of the neck and landed 1-4 in the first period. Conor McGuinness and Danny O’Connor added points to send their team in with a 1-6 to 0-3 lead.

Just after the restart the O’Mahonys had a great chance to get back into the game but failed to take the opportunity from the penalty spot.

In a low-scoring half, Brian Commons and Aidan McCann added to the Pats tally to keep them in control. On a night when Aaron Boyle and Thomas Rice pointed for the hosts, Junior Shotayo scored a consolation goal from an injury-time penalty.

ROCHE EMMETS 0-6

Cooley Kickhams chalked up their fourth win of the campaign when they recorded an eight point victory over Roche Emmets at Fr McEvoy Park on Saturday night.

It took a strong second half display to see the hosts over the line after Roche had matched them throughout the first half. The result leaves the Roche men level at the foot of the table alongside Mattock Rangers on four points from ten outings.

After a well contested first half, the sides were level at six points apiece when the short whistle sounded, but the visitors were unable to maintain their efforts after the restart.

Cooley dominated the second period and added 1-5 to their tally, with Michael Rafferty claiming the goal, while Roche failed to score after the break.

ST MARYS 3-11

DREADNOTS 2-9

St Marys got back to winning ways after their slip-up in their previous outing when they held off the challenge of Dreadnots in Ardee on Saturday night.

A strong final quarter, in which they scored 2-3, saw the hosts come from behind to claim a five-point victory. Following his four goal salvo against St Patricks a week earlier, Jay Hughes was back among the goals with another two, but on this occasion it wasn’t enough to propel his side to victory.

A tight first half ended with the Marys leading by just 1-6 to 1-5, but when Hughes scored his second goal on 45 minutes the Clogher men looked to be in a good position with a 2-6 to 1-8 advantage.

However, the Ardee men responded to the challenge and in the closing 12 minutes out-scored their opponents by 2-3 to 0-3 and ensured  they picked up the points.

Josh Taaffe, Sean Callaghan and Tiarnan Corrigan accounted for the St Marys goals, while Ronan Carroll and Carl Gillespie added points. At the other end, Craig Shevlin, Peter Kirwan and Conor Shevlin contributed to the Dreadnots scores on the night.

ST FECHINS 1-11

GERALDINES 2-8

Joe Corrigan landed an injury-time free to hand St Fechins a share of the spoils and secure a vital point in the battle against relegation.

It was a difficult opening period from the seasiders’ point of view, as they only had two points on the board, both from frees, through Joe Corrigan (3 min) and James McGlew (28 mins) at the halfway mark.

For the Gers, with the wind at their backs, the opening quarter was similar with two points on the board before a penalty and was converted at the 20 minute mark by Jim McEneaney.

They followed this with a point from the mark and into injury time added a second goal through John McGrohan and headed in with a comfortable seven point lead, 2-3 to 0-2.

The Fechins needed to come out fighting and James McGlew did just that with the opening point. Followed by another from substitute Eoghan Duffy.

The Gers pointed from play seven minutes in before James McGlew pointed from a placed ball. The home side added three more from play in the next ten minutes through James McGlew 0-2 and Brian Devlin to keep up the Fechins comeback.

Eoghan Duffy was fouled as he was on the attack and the second penalty of the match awarded but Niall Devlin was only able to claim one point as his shot went high and over the crossbar. However, the next play found Eoghan heading for goal a second time and this time Fechins found the net.

This left just one between the sides but Gers had one more score in them and with five minutes of normal time to go got their final point of the match.

A double save from the Gers No 1 kept them in the lead but the accuracy of Joe Corrigan from free left one between the sides heading into injury time. In the last kick of the match and under pressure Joe Corrigan pointed a free to leave it level at the final whistle.

ST FECHINS: Kyle Meegan; Mark Holohan, Shane Reilly, Niall McCabe; Ciaran McGinty, Colm O’Neill, Aaron McGlew; Podge O’Donohoe, Eoin Hackett; John O’Connell, Colm Hackett, Joe Corrigan 0-3; James McGlew 0-5, Niall Devlin 0-1, Sean Kerrisk.

Subs: Eoghan Duffy 1-1 for J O’Connell, Brian Devlin 0-1 for C Hackett.

GERALDINES: Sean McEneaney 0-1; Thomas McNamara, Dara O Gradaigh, Paul Clarke; Sean Thornton, James Craven, Neil Gartlan; Michael Rogers, Brian Cafferty; Eoin McDonnell, Gareth Neacy 0-2, John McCrohan 1-0; Matthew Corcoran 0-2, Jim McEneaney 1-2, Niall Brennan 0-1.

NAOMH MAIRTIN 2-12

MATTOCK RANGERS 0-8

Goals in either half was enough to sway this local derby in Monasterboice as Naomh Mairtin comfortably swatted away neighbours Mattock Rangers. The win now has the hosts firmly in the hunt for a league final spot a round before the split. Conor Healy strode up the field to plant his side’s first goal and Seán Flynn kept Rangers in touch before the half time whistle.

The second period was similar with Declan McCoy’s miserly defence sitting deep and causing Mattock problems. Terry Donegan found the range but Jack Lynch came off the bench and killed off the game, as their counter-attacking show that now has the Mairtin’s looking up rather than down.

NAOMH MAIRTIN: Joe Gordon 0-1; Conor Healy 1-0, Shane Morgan, Eoin Cooney; Evan Whelan, Seán Healy, Cian Sands; Adam Booth, Val Leddy 0-1; Paddy Usher 0-1, Bryan McQuillan, Paul Berrill; Tom Gray 0-8, Darragh Dorian, Ben Callanan.
