Kate O’Connor brings home gold at the Commonwealth Games

Dundalk's Kate O'Connor secured a gold medal at the Commonwealth Games heptathlon in Glasgow today.

O'Connor finished on top after two superb days of competition, becoming Northern Ireland’s first winner of the event since pentathlon gold in 1974.

The 25-year-old set the pace from the opening day, leading after the 100m hurdles and high jump before bouncing back from a difficult shot put in torrential rain to win her 200m heat in a season's best 24.14 seconds.

The St. Gerards AC athlete tightened her grip on gold today with an outdoor personal best of 6.37m in the long jump before producing a season's best 52.85m in the javelin to open up a commanding lead.

O'Connor sealed the title by winning the 800m in 2:10.45 to cap a memorable performance and will receive her gold medal on Thursday evening.
