Last week saw Dundee United and Scotland’s new prodigy, Ryan Gauld, transfer to Portuguese giants, Sporting Lisbon: a bit of a surprise, by all accounts.
The 18 year-old, snapped up for a fee of £3 million, has been wowing crowds for some time now but surprisingly, there had been very little interest from England.
At a diminutive 5’6, with the frame of a mere boy, many were put off. Gauld, though, had already made his decision – a brave one.
He was off to do his thing on foreign shores; a chance to hone his precocious, technically driven talent.
An old head on young shoulders, one can only hope this sets an example to other young footballers that the path to greatness isn’t always south of the border.
