The new series of House of Cards premiered last week and in it, a character called Howard Webb was introduced. Funnily enough, he was also someone everyone seemed to hate.
Apparently, being big, bald and having the look of someone who knows what he’s doing seems to be enough to convince people that you’re one of the best in the business. And yet, Webb continues to make horrific mistakes game-by-game.
Despite being less than 10 feet away from the incident, he refused to give a penalty to Luis Suarez despite the clearest of clear contact made on him by Arsenal’s Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain. In the super slo-mo replay, Webb is clearly visible wincing as the challenge is made as if to say “Don’t make me give another one”.
Referees have a hard job and no one’s perfect but it would seem to me that Howard Webb has lost his bottle and needs replacing as an official. That he’s going to Brazil as England’s representative merely means he won’t be the only one making an embarrassment of himself.
