Having previously written about the poor standard of refereeing, the issue again raised its ugly head in the FAI Cup semi-final between Drogheda United and Dundalk Sunday afternoon when referee Anthony Buttimer incredulously sent-off two Dundalk FC players 30 minutes into a cup semi-final with their local neighbours.
While it’s arguable the first red card dished out was deserved - the challenge was wild and unnecessary - I felt a booking would have sufficed. The second issued was just farcical.
If the FAI are determined to have the League of Ireland taken more seriously, they would do well to improve the standard in refereeing first because games of such magnitude, constantly being spoiled by such amateurs is doing nothing for the image of the game in this country.
