Mark Browne comes out on top in Sunday’s Singles Stableford at Dundalk Golf Club

Mark Browne comes out on top in Sunday’s Singles Stableford at Dundalk Golf Club.

While Michael Browne has clearly been the form player in the 2019 Winter Series, sponsored by Tiernan’s Centra Blackrock, it was his son Mark who came out on top in Sunday’s Singles Stableford competition.

The 12 handicapper shot 41pts and edged out club president Dessie Ward on countback thanks to a sizzling back nine which yielded 24pts.

Browne had a steady start with four successive bogies before parring the par three fifith and birdieing the par five sixth. That left him on 12pts after six holes and he picked up another five to the turn as he finished the front nine on 17pts.

He moved up several gears down the back nine with his round kick-started by a birdie four at the par five 10th for four points.

Three more followed at the next when he parred the index one 11th and he then collected four points at the 12th when he birdied the par five. That 11 point haul from three holes was followed by two point pars at the 13th and 14th and a two bogey at the 15th.

A three point par at the 16th and a two point par at the 17th left him on 39 points standing on the 18th tee and two points adrift of Ward who had posted his score earlier in the day. But Browne held his nerve and got his two point bogey five to reach 41pts and edge out Ward on countback.

Ward had the consolation of taking the Category Two prize while Billy Cairns (6) edged out Josh Mackin (1) on countback in Category One after both had returned 39pts. Peter McCaughey (19) claimed Category Three with 40pts. Gerry Murray (10) took the Bank Holiday Monday Open Stableford Singles with a score of 42pts.

He covered the front nine in 20pts after parring three of the first four holes for a 10pt return and down the back he picked up another 22pts helped by four three point pars including one at the 18th.

MacShane which proved decisive as Nicholas MacShane (17) and Adrian Kenny (19) both finished on 41pts.took second overall on countback with Kenny claiming Category Three while Colin Roche (5) took Category One and Fergal Duffy (16) won Category Two.

The first inter-club action of the year takes place on Saturday when our All-Ireland Fourball team meets Greenore in the preliminary round. This is a competition for players between 15 and 19 handicap and Frank Byrne’s team face three matches away with the other two at home.
