Shane McGuinness, who earlier in the season captured the Minor Scratch Cup, added another important trophy to his sideboard when he won the Cochrane Cup on Sunday.
Now playing off 15, McGuinness needed a strong back nine to pip another 15 handicapper, Len Mullins, after the two returned five-under par nett scores of 67 on a day when a strong swirling wind asked plenty of questions of the field.
Mullins, who was an early morning starter, set the score to beat after a steady round that saw him show great composure on the index three par five seventh to record a solid six after a bit of trouble on the tee.
McGuinness, playing the afternoon, began steadily but wasn’t as fortunate as Mullins on the seventh where he racked up a triple bogey eight. However, pars at the eighth and ninth helped him in turn in 36 nett.
Three more pars followed at the 10th, 11th and 12th before a bogey four at the index 16, 13th was followed by a par at the short par four 14th. McGuinness then birdied the difficult par four 15th and parred the long par four 16th before finishing with bogeys on the final two holes to come home in 31 nett for an 18 hole nett total of 67.
Ken Lynch (12) was the only other player in the field to shoot in the sixties as he recorded a 69 to take Category 2 while Maurice Soraghan (10) claimed Category 1 and Nigel Giff (21) won Category 3. Senior Panel member Conor Curran (1) took the Gross Prize with a level par 72 while Padraig Grennan (17) was the Juvenile winner.
