Reds relishing new campaign

GAA Louth Ladies NFL Preview

Louth Ladies commence their competitive season next Sunday away to Derry in Division Four of the newly sponsored Lidl National League. Having won the All Ireland and Leinster Junior Championships in 2015 the Reds are looking forward with relish to competing in 2016.

Last year these counties met in the league in Castlebellingham with the Wee County emerging strong winners on the day. However, as the Championship approached, Derry strengthened their squad and had a good victory over Lancashire before losing to Scotland in the semi final. To be fair to the Reds, they then had a convincing win in the final against Scotland.

Louth should start as favourites based on 2015 but Derry have a reputation for being stronger at home and as it is the first game of the season, nothing can be taken for granted.

Louth have been training since early December but poor weather conditions have limited their opportunities. They recently had two challenges in preparation for the season ahead against firstly Down and then Meath.

Down, relegated from Division Two in 2015, provided good opposition for Louth in Drogheda recently. In an evenly contested encounter where all players were given an opportunity to shine, Down eventually emerged winners on a scoreline of 1-12 to 1-9.

Meath, who continue to compete in Division Two, took on Louth in Dunganny, emerging victorious, 5-7 to 0-13, having held a half-time lead of 5-5 to 0-6, in a game influenced by a strong wind blowing down the length of the pitch. Both games against opposition from higher divisions gave the Louth management an opportunity to look at the depth of their squad which included some new faces from last year’s Minor squad.

Louth Ladies Annual Convention

Louth Ladies recently held their Annual Convention recently in The O’Connells clubrooms, Castlebellingham. The members of the Executive Committee were reinstated with the exception of the positions of Secretary, Development Officer and Assistant Treasurer which were vacated at the end of the year.
