Bellurgan United opened up a six point lead at the top of the Nivea for Men MDL Premier Division table following an excellent 2-0 win over Boyne Harps at Tom Flynn Park on Sunday morning.
The home side opened the scoring on 25 minutes after a stinging drive from Ciaran Sheelan was blocked by the Boyne centre-back and Gavin Long hammered the ball to the bottom corner to make it 1-0.
Bellurgan were playing some excellent football and with five minutes left to the end of the first-half Keith Finnegan’s powerful header from a Sheelan flick was clawed to safety by the visiting goalkeeper.
Play was evenly balanced in the early stages of the second-half and Robert Arthur was called into action to make a couple of notable saves to keep his side in front. There was a further scare for Bellurgan when a free-kick from the visitors rattled Arthur’s crossbar.
Sheelan whistled once inches wide but with 10 minutes left to play the home side secured the all important second goal when Ciaran Rogan weaved his way into the Boyne penalty area and unselfishly set up Sheelan to fire off a rocket.
The ball was cleared to Daniel O’Connor just outside the penalty area and he showed remarkable calmness to lob the ball over the crowded penalty area to send the ball dipping under the crossbar.
Before the final whistle Alex Bothwell’s side could have increased their lead through efforts form Darryn Gaynor, O’Connor and Shane Finnegan but the two goals were enough to ensure United remain top of the pile.
