Dealgan Boxing Club’s European Featherweight champion Amy Broadhurst recently won her eighth Irish boxing title in Dublin’s National Stadium.
This is the 49th All Ireland championship won by the Dealgan boxers since establishing themselves in Marian Park in 1994.
Amy has an undefeated record in any Irish title contest and such is her reputation that only one girl entered her weight division.
Her opponent was Shauna Kearney from Bunclody, who has reached the last four Irish finals, winning two of them.
From the outset of the bout Shauna seemed content on defending and trying to last the full three rounds against Amy, who with non-stop pressure and aggressive punching totally dominated her opponent.
Shauna was deservedly given a standing count in the third round as Amy unleashed a combination of punches to the head and body, giving Amy a comfortable 22 points to 2 victory.
This win has now qualified Amy to represent Ireland at the end of June in the EU Championships which are being held in Hungary and she will be part of a team that consists of none other than the great Katie Taylor.
Amy is one of the brightest prospects to ever step into the ring of female boxing and everybody wishes Amy all the best in her quest to bring home another Gold medal for her country and her club.
