Dealgan Amateur Boxing Club’s Amy Broadhurst won her 10th Irish boxing title at the recent U18 National Championships.
Amy claimed the 60 kilo Youth 2 title and, now back down at her natural fighting weight of 57 kilos, has become the youngest boxer in the history of female boxing to collect ten titles.
Amy’s U18 final was against Claire McDonagh of Castlebar Boxing Club in Mayo. Clare had recently won the 57 kilo Irish Championship and came into the competition with a lot of confidence.
Round one saw Amy use all of her ring knowledge to put an early stamp on the contest but with Clare showing such great heart and determination it was never going to be any easy contest for the Dundalk fighter.
Each of the four rounds were very competitive with Amy always looking to be holding an edge over her opponent with her greater array of punches and skills and at the end of a hard fought contest Amy was announced the winner on a unanimous decision.
The win qualifies Amy for the European Youth Championships which will be held in Italy from July 19-27. Amy will make the trip hoping to add another medal to the two European Junior gold medals she has already won, in doing so becoming the only female boxer in Irish boxing history to achieve this feat.
