Gabriel Adekola - a member of Dundalk MMA which is part of the Martial Arts School of Fitness in Jocelyn Street, Dundalk - took part in his first MMA fight recently in Monaghan.
Adekola squared up against local man Ciaran Murphy with both fighters competing in their first competitive fight.
Gabriel opened with a head kick, taking his opponent by surprise. The local man responded by trying to take Gabriel down but Adekola defended well with a nice push front kick.
The fight continued to go back and forth at a fast pace with each man looking to take the advantage. Gabriel’s opportunity came when he caught a round kick and slammed Murphy into the mat before locking in a rear naked choke. Murphy showed plenty of spirit but eventually had to tap out, giving Gabriel his first victory.
Wayne Rutherford, Chief Instructor of the MAS-F was delighted with Gabriel’s performance.
“The MMA class is one of our toughest class but it has the most rewards”, he said. “Gabriel is a perfect student. He listens and takes on board everything you say. He is a natural athlete, has great speed and power and is always willing to learn. We had a basic strategy for Gabriel’s first fight which he followed to a tee.”
His next fight is in a large show called the Clan Wars 12. This is shown on several TV stations including Setanta and Sky. This event will be in the Ulster Hall, Belfast on August 11.
There are five title fights on the card and it is one of the biggest MMA shows in Ireland. Everyone here at Dundalk MMA and the Martial Arts School of Fitness are proud and excited for Gabriel and will be there to support him in his next fight.
The MMA class trains two times a week, every Monday and Wednesday at 8pm.
