The clash of two unbeaten sides, Avenue Inn United and Designated Drinker’s who play out of Sean’s Tavern, was the big game in Division Two of the Tuborg Dundalk Pool League last week.
The home team started well and Aidan McLoughlin won the first frame against Niall Clifford with an excellent display of potting. Niall showed great determination to bounce back and win the next two frames and put Designated Drinkers 1-0 ahead.
The second match featured the United captain, Jonathan Smith, and Martin Hayes and in both frames Martin punished mistakes by Jonathan to win the match 2-0 and double the Designated Drinkers lead.
Ciaran Sullivan then gave the home team a chance when with a great display of pool he beat Don O’Brien 2-0 but the Designated Drinkers claimed the victory when Tony O’Hare beat Ciaran McGuinness 2-1 in the fourth match.
There was some joy for the home team, though, as they gained a bonus point when Shane Gorham beat Padjo O’Hare 2-1 in the final match to leave the final score 3-2 in favour of Designated Drinkers.
Elsewhere, Castle Bar Sling entertained Cluskey’s and it was the visitors who started best when Cathal McKenna beat Dermot Hannon 2-0.

The match was level when James King beat Shane Dillon 2-1 to set up a decider between Bryan Crowe of Sling and Alan Meegan. Bryan showed his experience to beat Alan 2-0 and thus claim an important 3-2 victory for Castle Bar Sling.
In the final match in Division Two, Sportsman’s Ravens entertained Jackie Murphy’s and it was the home team who started best when Peter O’Hagan beat Michael Breen 2-0.
The home team doubled their lead when JP Toner, with some excellent pool, beat Martin Brennan 2-1 but Jackie Murphy’s bounced back when team captain Kevin Soraghan easily beat Ciaran Lavelle 2-0. The scores were then level when Dermot Connolly beat the Sportsman’s captain Barry Keane 2-1.
The decider featured Patrick McArdle of Sportsman’s and Gerry Mernagh and it was Patrick who made the most of his opportunities to claim a 2-0 victory and more importantly claim a first victory of the season for the Sportsman’s Ravens.
