In the Tuborg Dundalk Pool League, the big game last week in Division One featured the third and fourth placed teams, Harrison’s Blue and Castle Bar Traders.
It was Harrison’s who started brightly when, in a tactical affair, Paul McQuillan beat Dave McGill 2-1 but the Traders were soon level when local snooker star Liam Johnston beat Paul Kearney 2-1.
With the match nicely balanced, the third game was vital and it was Harrison’s, courteous of Ciaran Renaghan who went ahead when he beat Stephen McBride 2-0.
Harrison’s wrapped up the victory in the fourth game when Kieran ‘Sunny’ Grimes beat the experienced Tiernan Mallon 2-1 and in the final match Ciaran Sheridan salvaged a bonus point for the Traders when he beat the Harrison’s captain Gerry Reenan 2-1 to leave the final score 3-2 in favour of Harrison’s.
Meanwhile, league leaders Avenue Inn Rovers entertained their counterparts United in a local derby match.
It was United who belied their lowly league position to go 1-0 ahead in the match when Ciaran McGuinness beat Declan Brady 2-0. A shock looked to be on the cards when Jonathan Murray went 1-0 up on John Dugdale; however John rediscovered his form to win his match 2-1 and level the match.
In the third game Shane Gorham entertained the individual champion Pat Brady and as Shane ran out of position in both frames it was Pat who capitalised to win 2-0 and put the league leaders 2-1 ahead.
In the fourth game it was the United captain Jonathan Smith who played some excellent pool to beat Stephen Gorham 2-1 and level the match.
The decider saw Ciaran Sullivan of United play John ‘Mother’ Browne and the form book looked as if it was going to be turned upside down when Ciaran won the first game, however with two vintage clearances John sealed a 2-1 victory for himself and a 3-2 victory for his team.
In Division 2 it was second against third as Windmill Black entertained the Lumper’s and it was the home team who started best when Chris Caulfield beat Stephen Finnegan 2-0. However the scores were soon level when Nathan Lambe beat Denise McArdle 2-0.
The home team soon took control of the match when Peter McCluskey beat Dom Gallagher 2-1 and Declan ‘Sunny’ Grimes beat Trish Lambe 2-0 to seal a 3-1 victory for the Windmill.
The Lumper’s rescued a bonus point when Ciaran Keenan beat Anthony Donegan 2-0 in the final match to leave the final score 3-2 in favour of the Windmill.
Sean’s Tavern got back to winning ways when they went to play Avenue Inn Swifts.
Martin Hayes put Sean’s ahead only for Shane Garvey to level the match for Swifts. Sean’s Tavern then took control of the match with victories for John Hoey, Tony O’Hare and Don O’Brien to leave the final score 4-1 in their favour.
League action takes a break this week as the doubles starts and all teams have been notified of the different venues for their players.
