Mary Marcus of Blackrock’s Golden Dragon Karate Club is set to be awarded after she was recently put through her paces at a Dan Grading held by Ireland Wadokai Karate-Do Remnei
Mary also had the extra pressure of doing this not only in front of fellow members of IWKR and their Parents, but members of visiting clubs from around the country and the Grading Panel itself which consisted of Sensei Barry Wilkinson 7th Dan, Sensei Tommy Marrett 4th Dan and Sensei Ollie McHugh 3rd Dan.
Mary has been training at the Golden Dragon Club under the guidance of Sensei Tommy Marrett 4th Dan for 6 years. She joined IWKR with her daughters Elizabeth who is a Brown Belt and Catherine who is a Blue Belt. They have all travelled throughout the country and the UK competing at various competitions and always return home victorious with numerous medals.
Recently Mary was part of a large Irish Team who represented IWKR in Birmingham, where she competed in Individual Kata (form), Pair Kata, Master Kata and Team Kumite (fighting), and came home with no less than 4 medals to her name. She is currently training 3 times a week under the guidance of Sensei Tommy Marrett and also travels to England to train with Sensei Barry Wilkinson. Mary has just started a new Karate Club in the Bay Estate School where her daughters attended and hopes to inspire her students as she is currently doing in both Blackrock and Reaghstown.
Sensei Tommy Marrett was no less than thrilled when Mary Marcus was awarded her 1st Dan by Sensei Barry Wilkinson, which is the first Dan Grading by an Executive of European Wadokai in Ireland, and not only will Mary Marcus get an IWKR 1st Dan Certificate, but she will also be the first person in Ireland to be awarded a European Wadokai 1st Dan Certificate.
Sensei Tommy Marrett said that “Mary Marcus has always being an extremely dedicated student since she first started training in Blackrock Community Centre six years ago. Mary now trains consistently 3 times a week, in Blackrock every Tuesday and Thursday and in Reaghstown every Eednesday, and is a role model to all those who want to aspire to the coveted black belt.”
Training in Blackrock every Tuesday & Thursday: 7-8pm for juniors and 7-9pm for seniors. Training in Reaghstown every Wednesday: 6-7pm for juniors and 6-8pm for seniors.
