DUNDALK Chamber of Commerce President Paddy Malone has rightly pointed out that the Gateway Report for Dundalk highlights a number of serious concerns.
Dundalk is still ranked last in the list of the nine Gateway towns and this is extremely disappointing.
Dundalk is in the same position as it was in 2009.
Mr Malone points out that the Dundalk unemployment rate stands at at 24.19 per cent.
This is significantly above the average for the Gateways towns.
This shows that even though Dundalk has attracted major industrial powers to the town in the last year, our problems are far from solved.
As Mr Malone points out we need to create jobs in the unskilled and semi-skilled areas.
“There are people among our unemployed whom the Paypals of this world will never reach,” Mr Malone said.
He also points out that poor broadband coverage is something that is no longer acceptable.
He states that Louth County Council is actively raising this matter with the broadband providers and hopes that this will be resolved.
But we have a higher than average increase in youth population here and greater investment in education and training and braodband provision is something that must be addressed.
This town deserves better.
