Man travelling from Denmark among thousands who queued for final time at iconic Irish chipper

Lennox's takeaway in Cork shut its doors for the final time over the weekend after 73 years in business. 

On Sunday, the iconic Cork chipper served its loyal customers for the last time, with thousands having queued for food at the chipper since the announcement of its closure was made last week.

The takeaway on Bandon Road in Cork City was founded by soccer star and former Blackpool FC player Mancunian Jackie Lennox and his wife Eileen in 1951.

Thirty people have lost their jobs due to the closure of the takeaway.

The family run business was a beloved Cork institution and the announcement of its closure came as a shock for its dedicated customers, prompting a huge response online. 

Thousands made their way to Lennox's before it closed on Sunday, including one man who travelled over 2,000km from Denmark. 

David Lavelle, originally from Cork but now living in Denmark, made the journey to visit the chipper one last time.

David said: "I had to get up at 5am, get a ferry across to Sweden, drive across Sweden over the big bridge, down under the sea and into Copenhagen airport. From there I flew to Dublin."

The chipper described as "iconic" and "nostalgic" by those queueing, will be sadly missed in Cork.
