THE IRISH couple who died after they were struck by a car in Rome earlier this week have been named locally.

A police investigation into the incident is continuing and The Department of Foreign Affairs has confirmed it's providing assistance to the family of the deceased who were aged 59 and 60.

They have been named locally as Paul and Mary O’Reilly from Kilmore, County Wexford.

According to several reports, the incident happened at a busy intersection in the Italian capital close to a campsite near the Presidential Palace Castel Porziano. The driver of the car sustained minor injuries.

It's understood Mr and Mrs O'Reilly were pronounced dead at the scene by emergency services.

The Department of Foreign Affairs has said it is aware of the incident and is providing consular assistance.

No further information has been released publicly.
